Notary Services

The Town of Mansfield offers notary services to the public in compliance with the Town’s notarization policy.  The notaries in the Town Clerk’s Office are able to: 

• Administer an oath
• Notarize acknowledgements
• Notarize an affidavit
• Supply the name change forms for land records only (recording of the executed form subject to current recording fees)

The fee for notarizing is $5.00 as authorized by Connecticut General Statutes. 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Two forms of identification, at least one of which also contains the photograph of the signer. Social Security cards and birth certificates may not be used as forms of identification per CGS 3-94a(9).
• Signer MUST sign the document in front of the notary in order to authenticate the signature.

Town staff acting as notaries are not authorized by the Town to notarize the following:

• A conveyance of land or real property in Connecticut
• Wills or living trusts
• Medical Directives e.g. living wills, durable powers of attorney for health care, do not resuscitate (DNR) orders, Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST), etc.
• Anything that states "is of sound mind"
• Any statement that requires the notary to swear to the authenticity of a document for which the notary is not the custodian e.g. I9 Employment Eligibility Verification, ID Verification, etc.
• Birth, death or marriage certificates - those vital records filed in the Town Clerk's Office are available as certified copies at a cost of $20.00
• Anything, from anyone, who is not appearing before the notary in person, unless virtual or remote notarizations are due to a public health emergency or other exigent circumstances, and are allowable by the State of Connecticut
• Any document in any language other than English
